NMC and FMGL route check

NMC MBBS Abroad Guidelines for Indian Students

A student-first, crawlable summary of the NMC study-abroad advisory, Screening Test Regulations and FMGL 2021 checks that Indian citizens and OCI students should verify before choosing a foreign medical university.

NMC does not endorse a foreign MBBS college list.

NEET-UG qualification is required for Indian citizens and OCI students taking admission abroad on or after May 2018.

Course duration, internship, English medium, local licence eligibility and subject coverage must be checked before admission.

FMGE/NExT and supervised internship in India remain part of the India-facing registration pathway.

Core requirements

FMGL 2021 checks for MBBS abroad

Official NMC page
FMGL 2021

Minimum 54 months course

The foreign medical course should run for at least 54 months of teaching, practical and clinical training before internship.

Students should verify the exact academic calendar, semesters, clinical posting schedule and whether the course is completed in the same foreign medical institution.

Internship

12 months internship abroad

The student should complete at least 12 months of internship in the same foreign medical institution after the course.

The internship should be hospital-based, hands-on and connected to the institution that awards the primary medical qualification.

Medium

English medium instruction

The medical degree should be taught in English for the India-facing licensing route.

Students should collect a written English-medium certificate and confirm that lectures, clinical training and assessments match the claim.

Subjects

Indian MBBS-equivalent subjects

The course and clinical training should be commensurate with MBBS in India and include core clinical subjects.

Check Community Medicine, General Medicine, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Surgery, Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Emergency/Casualty and lab services.

Licence

Local licence eligibility

The graduate should be eligible to register or get a licence to practise medicine in the country where the degree is awarded.

Ask whether the degree gives the same medical-registration route available to citizens of that country.

NEET

NEET-UG qualification

Indian citizens and OCI students taking admission abroad on or after May 2018 need to qualify NEET-UG.

NMC treats the NEET result as the eligibility certificate for MBBS abroad, subject to the applicable eligibility rules and validity period.

FMGE/NExT

FMGE or NExT after return

Foreign medical graduates need to clear the prescribed screening or licensing test for registration in India.

Students should plan FMGE/NExT preparation from the first year instead of treating it as an after-graduation issue.

India

Supervised internship in India

After clearing the required exam, FMGs must complete supervised internship in India before permanent registration.

The Indian internship route should be checked through NMC and the relevant State Medical Council before planning timelines.

Student FAQ

NMC MBBS abroad questions answered clearly

Does NMC approve or endorse a list of foreign medical colleges?

No. NMC clarifies that it does not endorse a list of foreign medical institutions or universities for MBBS or equivalent courses. Students must verify the university, course, duration, internship and fees directly.

Is NEET required before MBBS abroad?

Yes, for Indian citizens and OCI students taking admission abroad on or after May 2018, NEET-UG qualification is mandatory for the India-facing licensing route.

What course duration should students verify?

Students should verify a minimum 54-month foreign medical course, followed by at least 12 months of internship in the same foreign medical institution.

Can a student transfer between universities or countries during MBBS abroad?

For FMGL compliance, students should be extremely careful with transfer models because the course, training and internship are expected to be completed in the same foreign medical institution and country.

Does WDOMS listing mean automatic NMC approval?

No. WDOMS listing is one verification point, but it is not the same as NMC approval. NMC does not endorse a foreign college list, so students must check all FMGL conditions separately.

What happens after completing MBBS abroad?

A foreign medical graduate must clear the prescribed screening or licensing exam, currently FMGE/NExT as applicable, and complete supervised internship in India before permanent registration.

Compare countries after checking NMC fit

Use FMGE data, country rules, budget, clinical exposure and admission documentation together before shortlisting.
