NEET UG May Shift to Computer-Based Test Mode From 2027: NTA Tells Supreme Court
NTA has informed the Supreme Court that NEET UG is set to move from pen-and-paper mode to computer-based test mode from the next examination cycle. Students should start preparing for CBT-style practice while waiting for the official NEET UG 2027 bulletin.
The National Testing Agency, commonly known as NTA, has informed the Supreme Court of India that NEET UG is set to move to Computer-Based Test mode from the next examination cycle.
According to media reports citing PTI, NTA told the Supreme Court that the decision has been taken after consultation with the Centre. The agency also stated that the move is being considered in the interest of students and to strengthen trust in the national examination system.
This is a major development for lakhs of medical aspirants because NEET UG has traditionally been conducted in pen-and-paper mode using OMR sheets.
What Has NTA Said?
As reported, NTA has submitted before the Supreme Court that it is ready to conduct NEET UG in Computer-Based Test mode from 2027.
The statement was made during the hearing of petitions connected with NEET UG 2026 and exam-related concerns.
In its affidavit, NTA reportedly said that a High-Level Committee of Experts has recommended shifting NEET UG to CBT mode.
NTA also pointed out that among the major examinations conducted by it, NEET UG was one of the few remaining exams still being held in pen-and-paper mode.
What Does CBT Mode Mean?
CBT means Computer-Based Test.
In this format, students do not mark answers on an OMR sheet. Instead, they sit in an exam centre and answer questions on a computer screen.
Usually, CBT exams include:
question palette on screen option selection by mouse review and mark-for-review options timer on screen final submission through the computer system
However, the final format of NEET UG 2027 will be known only after the official NEET UG 2027 Information Bulletin or public notice is released by NTA.
Does This Mean NEET UG 2027 Is Confirmed as CBT?
As per the reported statement before the Supreme Court, NEET UG is expected to move to CBT mode from 2027.
But students should remember one important point:
Final rules, exact exam pattern, number of shifts, language options, syllabus, marking scheme, normalisation rules and centre allocation process will be confirmed only through the official NTA NEET UG 2027 Information Bulletin.
So, students should not panic. They should prepare academically as usual and slowly become comfortable with computer-based mock tests.
Why Is This Change Important?
This change may become one of the biggest reforms in NEET UG examination management.
A computer-based exam can help in:
reducing OMR handling issues improving exam security faster processing of responses better digital monitoring reducing paper-based logistics bringing NEET closer to other major NTA exams
At the same time, students from rural and semi-urban areas may need extra support and practice to become comfortable with CBT mode.
This is why schools, coaching centres and counselling platforms must start preparing students early.
What Should NEET 2027 Aspirants Do Now?
Students preparing for NEET UG 2027 should not change their main academic strategy. Biology, Chemistry and Physics preparation will still remain the foundation.
But from now, students should also start developing CBT exam habits.
Students should start: Practicing online mock tests Learning how to use the question palette Practicing time management on screen Reading long questions on a computer/mobile/tablet screen Avoiding fear of technology Practicing full-length mock tests in a CBT-like environment Understanding mark-for-review and answer-change options Will the Syllabus Change?
There is no confirmed official information that the syllabus will change only because the mode may shift to CBT.
Changing from pen-and-paper to computer-based mode means a change in exam delivery method, not necessarily a change in syllabus.
Students should continue following the official NEET syllabus and wait for the official NEET UG 2027 bulletin.
What About Students Who Are Not Comfortable With Computers?
This is a genuine concern.
Many NEET aspirants come from villages, small towns, Bengali-medium schools, Hindi-medium schools and other regional backgrounds. For them, the academic preparation may be strong, but computer-based testing can feel new.
So, students should not wait until the last moment.
Even if a student does not have a laptop, they can start with:
mobile-based mock tests computer practice at school cyber cafe practice coaching centre CBT practice weekly online test practice
The goal is not to become a computer expert. The goal is simply to become comfortable with clicking answers, moving between questions and managing time on screen.
ILMALINK MEDIGO Advice For Students
ILMALINK MEDIGO advises NEET 2027 aspirants to stay calm and prepare smartly.
Do not believe rumours or random social media messages. Follow only official NTA notices and trusted education updates.
For now, students should focus on three things:
Strong concept clarity in Biology, Chemistry and Physics Regular NEET-level MCQ practice Gradual CBT mock test habit from this year itself
If NEET UG 2027 is finally conducted in CBT mode, students who start practicing early will have a clear advantage.
Important Note
The shift to CBT mode has been reported based on NTA’s statement before the Supreme Court. Students must wait for the official NEET UG 2027 Information Bulletin or public notice from NTA for final confirmation of exam mode, pattern, schedule, language options and other rules.
